It must be heart-breaking to see your $35 million home be sold for just $3 million. Former CEO Stephen C. Hilbert and his wife Tomisue lost their home to CNO Financial, formerly known as Conseco, in order to make up for outstanding debts with the company. The lavish French country estate had been for sale for over five years. The sluggish economy make high-end luxury homes very difficult to sell.
The home, called Le Chateau Renaissance, is a French-style country estate that covers 25,000 square feet and boasts and aditionall 15,000-sqare-foot sports facility complete with swimming pools, a waterfall, pool house and a beautifully manicured landscape. It is one of the most well-known residences in the state.
The new buyers are Forrest and Charlotte Lucas (think Lucas Oil and Lucas Oil Stadium – home of the Colts). They purchased the home last week. The Carmel, Indiana mansion has 36 rooms, and was purchased through auction from the insurance company that Stephen Hilbert founded. “I can justify it by having this as a corporate retreat for my employees and for my customers, and of course we hope to have friends and family and have some social functions for the city on top of that,” Lucas said. When asked if the property would ever be used as a personal residence, Charlotte Lucas replied, “I really don’t know right now; however, I see this as the perfect site for occasional fundraisers and benefits.”
“When I heard Forrest and Charlotte Lucas say they love the house and call it a work of art, I knew it is in good hands,” Hilbert said last week per the Indy Star . “After it has been sitting (empty) for several years, Tomisue and I are so happy that it is owned by someone who can bring it back to life.”
